Mother Earth
"Can we ever take them back?"

WORDS
MOTHER EARTH
How can you buy or sell the sky? The warmth of the land? Sandy shore?
Mist in the woods? All these are a part of man.
The shining water? It's our blood. Eagle, rock, and tree…
The earth's not a thing to be bought or sold, she is free.
She is free.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth, your face so black,
all the ways that we hurt you... can we ever take them back?
Your hunger for destruction? It’s killing all the land,
leaving only desert and empty space behind.
You are thieves who steal in the night,
living in the shadows and hiding from the light.
Hiding from the light.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth, your face so black,
all the ways that we hurt you... can we ever take them back?
I can't believe the things that I see. Everywhere I look is war and misery.
So much for this grand human race.
I hope something better will soon take our place.
I hope something better will soon take our place.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth, your face so black,
all the ways that we hurt you... can we ever take them back?
And now I’ve got this feeling that maybe you will know,
long ago I had hope, but now? I dunno.
Looking at the darkness that used to be our sky...
That black? It tries to fill me. And I? I start to cry.
Oceans dying. Forests burning down. Rivers ceased their flowing.
And Poison in the ground.
Mother Earth, Mother Earth, your face so black,
all the ways that we hurt you... can we ever take them back?
Mother Earth, Mother Earth, your face so black,
all the ways that we hurt you... can we ever take them back?
Mother Earth... Mother earth… your face so black,
all the ways that we’ve hurt you... can we ever take them back?
Can we ever take them back?
Can we ever take them back?
BACKSTORY
Ahhh... now... this...
Inspired by a copy of Chief Seattle’s [alleged] famous 1854 speech I found in a cabin called Ravens Roost on a monumentally epic night in Petersburg, Alaska circa 1992.
Mother Earth is currently somewhere between concept and scratch and on this raw audio you'll hear me messing around with different vocal sounds throughout the piece.
